LIDBA sponsored bike ride

Liz Bisset in Fundraising
Tuesday 11 of November, 2008
The Open Air Pool was one of the charities nominated to receive money from the proceeds of the LIDBA (Liphook and District Business Assoc) charity bike ride this year. Our team of five completed the 25-mile ride and raised £261.50 in sponsorship and a further sum of over £600 was presented to the pool at the LIDBA Presentation Evening.
We have been invited to enter a team for next year's ride and would hope to get a bigger team next time. More details will be posted as we get them. If you think you would like to be one of the team please get in touch with us.

Look out for the Open Air Pool's 'raffle barrow' at the Christmas Festivities to be held in Petersfield on the weekend of December 6th and 7th. A similar raffle during the Summer Festivities raised a magnificent £700. Let's hope we can make this next one a big success too.

Progress report on the re-tiling

Liz Bisset in News
Tuesday 11 of November, 2008
Many supporters will be pleased to hear that the second phase of the re-tiling is underway at the moment. The old tiles from the deep end and the walls have now been removed and the re-tiling should happen, weather permitting, in the next few weeks. Since funds are very tight we continue with fundraising efforts and the major event will be a concert to be held on Saturday 31st January 2009. Further details of this can be seen under Upcoming Events on the Welcome Page.

LiDBA Sponsored Cycle Ride

Liz Bisset in Fundraising
Wednesday 11 of June, 2008
Although our team only consisted of five cyclists, we all had a good time and enjoyed the 25-mile ride which we undertook with almost 1300 others in glorious sunshine and through beautiful countryside, on Sunday 8th June. Lots of people visited our stall too and the whole event was good fun. We haven't got the total yet for our own sponsorship but hope to have raised several hundred pounds. Let's hope we can encourage a few more of our cycling supporters to join us next year.

Fundraising for Re-tiling

Bruce in News
Sunday 09 of March, 2008
The condition of the tiles covering the surface of the swimming pool has been deteriorating for several years and the cost of remedial work to repair them reached a point last spring (March '07) where it was clear that it would be more economical and probably necessary to undertake a complete re-tiling. To this end several companies were asked to quote for the job and it was clear that an amount of about £75,000 would have to be found.
A review of the finances of the pool showed that although some funds had been set aside for this eventuality, there would not be enough to cover the cost of complete retiling, so in June '07 a campaign was launched to "Buy-a-Tile".

Both the Petersfield Post and Petersfield Herald supported this campaign and gave the pool lots of publicity exhorting the people of Petersfield to support their pool. Posters were put up around town and at the pool, and people started to "buy" tiles. In fact the support from townsfolk and the surrounding area was so good that very quickly almost £10,000 had been raised. Recognition should be given to the stalwart "Supporters of the Pool" who rallied round and made some substantial donations to start the fund growing. Local businesses also came in with their support and gave donations of £20 and more. To recognise their donations, cards representing tiles with the company names, were placed at the entrance to the swimming pool for all to see. Raffle tickets for the Grand Draw were sold in town every month and this helped promote the swimming pool and highlight the need for help with the re-tiling project.
Various children increased the funds with sponsored swims, a lucky prize winner in a national competition kindly donated her prize and Mr Perry very generously gave his windfall from the Portman/Nationwide merger. The staff and members of the Swimming Club got together and raised £1,000 and many people nominated the pool as their charity in the Butser Challenge. The £5,215 raised this way has given the fund a good boost.

All in all, people's generosity has been outstanding and the total raised now stands at over £20,000. To this we can add grants made by Hampshire County Council, EHDC, the Petersfield Town Council and several local trusts, bringing the total to over £35,000.
